About 81 Creative

Built from journalism. Shaped by strategy. Focused on athletes.

81 Creative was founded by Andrew Spellman, an editor, photojournalist and marketing strategist who saw a gap between how talented athletes perform and how clearly they are presented to the programs evaluating them.

The Founder

An editor’s approach to athlete visibility.

I did not build 81 Creative because athletes needed more social media posts. I built it because too many talented athletes lacked a clear, credible and sustained way to tell their story.

My career began in journalism, where every assignment required me to identify what mattered, earn trust, work under pressure and communicate a story clearly. That mindset continued when I moved into marketing communications, and those same skills now guide the way 81 Creative positions athletes for recruiting.

As an editor, I have led newsroom strategy, redesigned publications, developed new audience products and helped traditional media organizations adopt more modern digital and marketing systems. As a photographer and filmmaker, I have spent years documenting athletes in the moments that reveal who they are as competitors.

81 Creative brings those disciplines together. The work is part editorial judgment, part visual storytelling and part integrated marketing strategy. Every campaign is designed to create a clearer picture of the athlete and place that story in front of the right people.

Professional Foundation

Three disciplines. One system.

81 Creative is not built around one platform, one camera or one tactic. Its foundation comes from three connected areas of professional experience.

01

Editorial judgment

Nearly a decade in journalism has shaped how stories are identified, structured, verified and presented. That editorial discipline keeps each athlete campaign focused on what is meaningful rather than what is merely loud.

Journalism and newsroom leadership

02

Visual storytelling

Photography and video are used to document performance, reveal personality and create assets that help coaches evaluate an athlete more clearly.

Photography, video and content production

03

Integrated strategy

Graduate education and professional experience in integrated marketing communications guide the campaign structure, audience targeting, outreach and promotion behind the creative work.

Why 81 Creative Exists

Talent should not be hidden by a weak presentation.

Recruiting is not a simple meritocracy. Ability matters, but so do access, timing, communication, geography and the clarity of the athlete’s materials.

01

The problem

Many athletes and families are expected to manage recruiting communication, content production, social media, promotion and coach outreach without an organized strategy.

02

The missed opportunity

Strong performances can disappear inside camera rolls, poorly edited clips or disconnected social media accounts. Coaches may never receive a clear picture of the athlete.

03

The response

81 Creative developed a campaign model that combines professional coverage, athlete positioning, targeted promotion and organized recruiting outreach.

04

The standard

The goal is not to manufacture hype. It is to present real athletic ability with the consistency, professionalism and context it deserves.

“The best athlete campaigns do not invent a story. They reveal the one that is already there.”
Andrew Spellman · Founder, 81 Creative

Working Philosophy

The principles behind every campaign.

01

Strategy before content

Photography and video are more valuable when they support a defined recruiting position, audience and communication plan.

02

Credibility before hype

The work should elevate real ability without making promises, exaggerating interest or manufacturing a false image of the athlete.

03

Relationships before reach

Visibility matters most when it reaches relevant programs and supports genuine communication, not when it simply produces a large public number.

04

Consistency before one moment

Recruiting stories develop over time. Campaigns are designed to build useful assets and sustained visibility across a season and, when appropriate, throughout the year.
